With all the attention this new mix has drawn, there will be both ecstatic lovers and vocal haters. This is a very well thought out and very desirable hybrid dog, and they are not the polar opposites some might think! Most people aren't aware that Pomeranians were actually used as sled and herding dogs in Iceland as far back as 8,000 years ago and are descendants from the Spitz family. Originally weighing in at around 30 lbs, they have been slowly bred down to smaller sizes, and recently even having some toys weigh in at 4 lbs. Most Pomeranians are actually pretty sturdy dogs and are very loving and easy to train. One must avoid encouraging Small Dog Syndrome which usually leaves the fault in the owner's corner. The Siberian Huskies are also descendants of the Spitz family and hailed from Northern Asia. They were also used as working sled dogs by the Chukchi Indians. They are very intelligent and independent which can cause some to say they are difficult to train. A Husky just needs a good reason to please you and positive re-enforcement works best. They love to be near their families and actually do quite well indoors, but they need massive amounts of exercise and mental stimulation.
Breeders and owners of the new hybrid mix of the Pomeranian and Husky known as the Pomsky have found it to produce a loyal, energetic, loving family pet better suited to smaller yards and apartments than the Husky, but often having the beautiful markings and eyes of the Husky we love, just smaller. Breeders have no control over the nature of the combination, and variations even in the same litter are possible. The average size of a Pomsky will usually range from 13-28 lbs in a first gen 50/50 mix, and have a height of 10-20", and they come in a rainbow of possible coat combinations and eye colors. Some Pomskies will howl and talk like a Husky, others will bark, but not as "yappy" as some Pomeranians. They do need play and exercise and love to walk or jog with you, but also do great with a romp of ball in the yard. A secure yard is a must for all dogs, but Pomskies won't need the 6ft security fence that a lot of Huskies do.

To address the haters out there, our Pomskies are bred with the female being the Husky and the male being the Pomeranian, of course! All breeding is done by artificial insemination which is safer for the pair, but very expensive and time consuming for the breeder. The female will have many visits with the veterinarian specializing in reproduction for progesterone testing, AI, ultrasounds and more. The male plays his role and has several visits along with her. All of this may still not result in a pregnancy, so the cost of producing a viable, healthy litter of Pomskies is very high. We are also looking to have the base bloodlines of this potential new breed be strong, so we have spent considerable time and money securing the best of both breeds of parents. These costs are reflected in the price of the puppies, and only you will know if this is worth it for you to have one of these amazing puppies!
